There’s many packages out there to let you print out checks from online order forms, then deposit the check normally at your bank. I own one but don’t use it any longer, there’s a lot of hassles involved you should know about before getting one. The big names in this field are Versacheck Platinum ($99), Checksoft ($49), Insticheck ($99), Just Checking (14.95), and The Check Writing Partner ($125).
I used this years ago so people could enter on a secure form their bank account and routing number, plus a check number (they would write void on that one and not use it). It was handy in the days before PayPal. The down side to these products is that some banks don’t accept printed drafts, so check with them before getting this. Many tellers would reject it anyway because there’s no signature (just their printed name). Also, some banks require you to use magnetic toner so their scanners can read it. If they do, count on dedicating a printer to it, also you’ll have to check to see if MICR toner cartridges are even available for it.
Today, the modern approach like accepting checks through PayPal, or a gateway that supports check acceptance. Less people are using checks, since the advent of the modern debit card with a Visa logo that works like a credit card.
There’s also secure Internet gateways which let you accept them via a shopping cart or a virtual terminal (for phone/mail order). Combine that with a check guarantee program and it’s much safer than waiting for them to clear. This is especially true of international checks which take 30 days to clear (they might give you credit for the deposit right away, but even an international money order or cashiers check won’t actually clear the banking system for a month).
Back in the late 90′s I used this kind of software to print checks from online orders, and it did increase sales. It’s just with all the advances in technology these programs have really gone the way of the dinosaurs… If you have questions about the modern solutions available, give me a call at 800-715-8053.
